What is LanJAM?
LanJAM is a chat app for your family that runs entirely on your home network. Think of it like having your own private AI assistant that nobody outside your home can access.
Why LanJAM?
- Private by design — Your conversations never leave your home network. No data is sent to any cloud service, ever.
- Safe for the whole family — Built-in safety features protect younger family members with age-appropriate content rules that cannot be turned off.
- Experiment freely — Try out AI without worrying about subscriptions, usage limits, or your data being used to train someone else's models.
- Works offline — Once set up, LanJAM works even without an internet connection (as long as the AI models have already been downloaded).
How does it work?
LanJAM uses a technology called Ollama to run AI models directly on a computer in your home. These models are like different "brains" the assistant can use to answer your questions, help with writing, explain concepts, brainstorm ideas, and much more.
You chat with the AI through your web browser — just like you would with any website. There is nothing to install on your phone, tablet, or laptop. Simply open the address in your browser and start chatting.
Who is it for?
LanJAM is designed for families who want to explore AI together in a safe, private environment. Everyone in the family gets their own account, and nobody can see anyone else's conversations.
The family admin (usually the person who set it up) manages accounts, chooses which AI model to use, and configures safety rules for different age groups.
What can you do with it?
- Ask questions and get detailed answers
- Get help with homework, writing, or creative projects
- Brainstorm ideas
- Have fun conversations
- Upload documents and ask the AI about their contents
- Use voice input to speak your messages instead of typing
